This Initiative was created by the City of Omaha Mayor’s Office, the Sherwood Foundation, Omaha Public Schools and Building Bright Futures.

-Helps agencies and schools to develop middle school after school opportunities
-Offers quality and free after school programming to underserved students in 6 Omaha Public Middle Schools
-Offers programming specific to student needs
-It provides non-ideological support for both agencies and schools
-Secures additional resources to serve these students with long term plans
-Develops relationships between community agencies and Omaha Public Schools

It has recently been determined there are underserved areas in Omaha that have a high concentration of children, but few after school programs. Recent surveys have shown that forty percent of children in late elementary and middle school are home without adult supervision at sometime during the week. It is challenging for parents to find programs that provide transportation, affordability, healthy meals and snacks. Parents most trust after school programs that take place in schools.

Middle School Learning Centers operate every school day between the hours of 2:45 and 5:30 pm and each school day during summer school.

OPS School sites with Coordinating Agencies are as follows:

-King Science and Technology Magnet School/Bethesda Learning Academy

-Marrs Magnet Middle School/Camp Fire USA

-McMillan Magnet Middle School/Y.M.C.A.

-Monroe Middle School/Urban League of Nebraska

-Morton Magnet Middle School/Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands

-Norris Middle School/Camp Fire USA

The Coordinating Agency’s Site Director works with other nonprofit agencies to provide additional programming and increase long-term opportunities. The Site Director serves on the school’s leadership team to provide a direct link between the school day and after school programs. Programs are directly tied to the academic curriculum used during the school day. Programs focus on recreation, academic enrichment, nutrition and cultural activities.
